This is to clarify the status of embarkation ladders on board in relation to the commonly quoted “30‑month” renewal period.
There is no SOLAS regulation that automatically requires embarkation ladders to be renewed after 30 months.
The primary requirement is that all embarkation ladders are in satisfactory condition, correctly installed, and fit for use at all times; they must be retired if inspection reveals damage, wear, or deterioration, regardless of age.
The 30‑month figure is used as a best‑practice / guideline by many flag States, PSC and industry bodies, especially following recent IMO guidance, but condition always takes precedence over age.
Please ensure that:
All embarkation ladders are inspected monthly as per SMS and recorded in the log.
Any ladder showing noticeable wear, broken steps, damaged manropes, or corrosion is tagged out and replaced immediately, even if still under 30 months old.
Ladders that have been in service more than 30 months are given extra attention and, where practicable, prioritized for replacement during the next opportunity, unless they are demonstrably in excellent condition.

Current SOLAS‑LSA position (embarkation ladders)
For embarkation ladders used at lifeboats/liferafts, SOLAS Chapter III / LSA Code do not currently prescribe a fixed 30‑month renewal period. The requirement is that embarkation arrangements are regularly inspected, maintained, and replaced when they are found not to be fit for purpose (condition‑based).
Future entry‑into‑force of the 30‑month service‑life rule
The new IMO performance standard for pilot transfer arrangements, Resolution MSC.576(110), adopted in June 2025, will enter into force on 1 January 2027 (next year). From that date it becomes mandatory for all relevant ships.

Good afternoon, everyone. I wanted to ask about the current regulations regarding the expiration date or time frame for changing the ladders for disembarking to rescue boats and life rafts. From what I have read, they are only subject to a visual inspection. Thank you for your help, colleagues.
